1894 Barber Dime sells for $1.3 million

In this undated photo provided by David Lawrence Rare Coins, this pristine-condition rare dime made in 1894 at the San Francisco Mint sold Monday, March 7, 2005, for $1,322,500 at a rare coin auction in Baltimore. Only 24 dimes were made in 1894 at the San Francisco Mint, and this is the finest of the 10 known surviving specimens, according to John Feigenbaum, President of David Lawrence Rare Coins of Virginia Beach, Va., the auctioneer. The coin was consigned by collector, Bradley Hirst, of Richmond, Ind., who paid $825,000 for it six years ago, and sold to an anonymous bidder who participated in the auction by telephone. That's the most anyone has ever paid for a dime.

Ok I about had a heart attack..as I'm sure many of you had when you hear a coin goes for this amount of money and you think you have one. First off I'm NOT a coin collector. My grandfather and I had refinshed a old dresser years ago and my job was to clean it out. Way back in the corner of one I found an old dime. Today when I got to work and read this story I knew I had a dime from the 1890's. 1893 to be exact....so because I'm NOT a collector can anyone out there help me out by telling me if mine is worth anything at all? And yes it was from the San Francisco Mint. Pretty good shape, her face and the writing is still defined. Any idea? e-mail me at jessisheets@hotmail.com or post something on this site. Thanks~Jessi

Jessi. The 1894 dime is extremely rare as there are only 10 known specimens. The 1893 that you have is much more common.

I have a dime 1894 in my hand. How munh does it worth? You said they are rara

If it's an authentic 1894-S (there are only 10 known specimens) it's worth a whole lot of money. My guess is it's a plain 1894 or an 1894-O.
